The Stewards

Public Spaces is a for profit organization founded by a group of people who met online and came together around a powerful shared vision. We remember when the internet was better, and feel that people were somehow more social before social media. Our shared instincts turned into collective action, and we began to work together at the tail end of 2020.
We were subsequently joined by a number of contributors who support us with whatever time they can spare, and our legal structure is similar to that of a cooperative, where people earn an ownership stake through the value they add to the project.

We believe the common, founding principles of all shared spaces involve working hard and sacrificing, being inclusive and charitable towards others, being honest and transparent with information, and taking responsibility for one’s own actions and the success of the community.

Public Spaces promises to respect user privacy by following privacy by design and privacy first principles. We comply with GDPR regulations and prioritize user privacy by minimizing data collection and providing users control over their data. Our mission is to elevate social wellbeing by mitigating issues found in other social media platforms such as fake news, online harassment, and algorithmic bias. We strive to foster a more purposeful and sustainable user experience while reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions, and aim to provide tools that promote fulfillment, rather than addiction.

We are a self-funded pre-revenue collective trying to create the world we want to live in.

It is no secret that the current paradigm of social media is broken. But we still believe in the promise of the early internet, that capitalism can be a force for good in society, and that humane technology will ultimately triumph. You can call us naive; we prefer the term ‘optimistic’. Cynicism is not rational, nor realistic.

We are not content creators, we don’t tweet, or proselytize on LinkedIn or Facebook, and we don’t have fancy academic credentials. We haven’t worked for FAANGs, nor are we seasoned entrepreneurs who have raised a gazillion dollars from big-shot investors. We are just responsible, competence people (oddballs, actually!) working around the clock because we see ourselves as part of the solution. Our philosophy is to align our incentives with your interests, and then lock them in place.

We are all dancers, gardeners, musicians, organisers, engineers, designers, community members and community leaders who are putting in our time and skills to bring this project to life! Our team has literally decades of experience in corporate environments, and we want to take that experience to create a social platform that properly reflects the way real communities work, owned and informed by contributors and users.

But we can’t do it alone. There is so much work to do and we are always open to people who can bring more diversity and talent to our founding team, or anyone who wishes to make flexible contributions.
